The story of the Golden Retriever begins in Scotland in 1865, the same year the American Civil War ended. Dudley Marjoribanks, a Scottish landowner, purchased the only yellow puppy in a litter of black wavy-coated retrievers. The Scotsman wished to breed quality retrievers for the environment of his Scottish homeland, and he joined the yellow dog to a Tweed Water Spaniel and kept the yellow pups that resulted.
