The first known proboscidean appeared in Africa around 60 million years ago, just a blink of the eye after dinosaurs went extinct. It stood only 3 feet tall at the shoulders and had a short trunk. The best known descendants are the giants Wooly Mammoth and Mastodon, beasts of the ice age. From the same family tree came the Indian and African Elephants, although interaction with humans and millions of years of shifting climates have reduced their ranges back to the Indian subcontinent and Africa south of the Sahara.
Even these tiny Elephant figures reveal the grace and power of the noble creatures. They could be part of an Africa-themed gathering or art project, decorations for an elephant-themed party, or as educational toys in a unit on conservation or African animals.
