Historically, the Black Bear ranged throughout all of North America except for the Arctic, the southwestern desert, and the southern parts of Mexico. Development and excessive hunting pushed Black Bears into a more limited range, but since conservation efforts began in the early 1900s, they’ve rebounded, expanding both their range and their numbers. Although shy and elusive, Black Bears have been spotted in 41 states.
These cautious Black Bears look like they’re sneaking through the forest, but they’ll get noticed if you add them to a science or social studies project, a forest diorama, or an art project. They’re also used in charms and bracelets and for sports teams.
